“Revenge Of The ScarJo” by The Margaret Hooligans: Quirky, ragtag garage rock

They are known as The Margaret Hooligans: A female musician on electric ukulele and lead vocals, and a male artist on drums and teapot, providing backup vocals. Together, they constitute a single band that blends elements of garage rock, funk, and soul, with a mysterious persona that, in their words, “having people enjoy our sounds without knowing a thing about its creators feels just about right.” Here’s their latest song, “Revenge Of The ScarJo”– keep reading for my thoughts!

Listing The Who, New Orleans, James Brown, Miles Davis, Soul Train, The White Stripes, Grateful Dead, and Fiona Apple as their influences, they put a unique spin on their sound– and that more than shines through on this song– with its artfully garage-esque, demo-like sound that brings an untold amount of quirkiness to the whole song. The guitar work is great, bringing in a lot of character, coupled with the unconventional percussion choices. Fool you not, though, the drumming is tight and well-controlled, with the guitars playing perfect tandem, to yield an element of polish, driving the song forward.

Attention to detail is a highlight in “Revenge Of The ScarJo”, and from the vocals to the subtle complexities in the drumming serve to demonstrate that rather well. The vocals are slightly recessed, letting the guitars ring loud and bring a very grunge rock sound to the table, and as a fan of the style growing up, I was immediately treated to a trip of nostalgia, courtesy of this song.
