“All Along” is a strong showing from The Proper Hustlers, a five-piece indie pop band based in the greater Philadelphia area. That balance comes through clearly in their sound, which leans into indie pop but leaves room for touches of jazz and pop structure. It’s a mix that doesn’t try too hard to impress, but still makes you pay attention.

The guitar holds a consistent rhythm with a trebly tone. The arrangement is really great, especially the chord voicings used. Every instrument, from guitars to synths to the horn section, feels well placed. The guitar solo is very well phrased. It’s bluesy and poppy, not too flashy, with just the right amount of expression. There are twangy guitar elements throughout. The vocals are nicely textured. I really loved the vocals. We hear some jazzy-sounding chords in the verses. You feel like swaying to the laid-back rhythm and the sweet, beautiful harmonic content of the song. The band are brilliant songwriters. The outro is filled with layers and you’re left with a warm feeling in your heart and stomach.
The nicely textured vocals sit comfortably at the center, expressive without overselling emotion. Joe Kenney’s keys add depth, while Ethan Stauffer’s guitar work blends rhythm and melody with clarity. The rhythm section, Carter Fox on bass and Chris Fox on drums, keeps everything moving with a laid-back but steady feel.
There’s also a natural sense of space in the recordings. Nothing feels rushed. The songs have room to breathe, and that makes a difference. The Proper Hustlers don’t chase trends or overstuff their sound. Instead, they offer well-crafted songs with enough detail to keep things interesting and enough ease to keep things enjoyable. It’s a solid listen, and a band worth keeping an eye on.
