‘Potvory’ by TANKATAKA is a dark and sensual, alt-indie number (with elements of RnB) about being rooted in a world that wants to break you. The world ‘potvory’ translates to ‘monster(s)’ in Ukranian. Its lyrics describe a seemingly hopeless situation where, “…supports are broken…” and “…there are monsters inside…”.

‘Potvory’: ‘Monsters’ in Safe Places
The lyrics draw on imagery of a tall, deep-rooted tree that stays upright even as the world around it burns. The bridge of the song is where this sentiment seems more or less realised.
“…Like a tree in a field,
I stand alone in captivity….
In a closed circle…”.
‘Potvory’ holds out for resilience in its lyrics, as the song revisits in its verse and bridge.
“…You say that you break under pressure, like a tree.
But you’re still holding on,
Your foundations still endures…”.
Though in ‘captivity’ the narrator still persists.
“…I am in captivity,
The wind is blowing me down.
But I keep fit, I’m fine…”.
The mood of these lines is fighting resilience and persistence even in a bleak situation.
“…It will be fine very soon,
Will it happen? No…”.
The lyric “…I do not believe…” highlights what seems to hold the narrator back. It captures the hopelessness they feel in a world that pressures people to be and act a certain way.
“Potvory’ instrumental is almost soothing with synths chiming in like a heartbeat. The chimelike synths and shuffling percussion paired with TANKATAKA’s soothing, bright tone, give the song a calm almost lo-fi vibe.
This juxtaposition in TANKATAKA’s ‘Portvory’ help the song subtly build in intensity and in turn convey the emotion in the song very poignantly. The song is easy-to-listen to, with a moving, soothing vocal performance.
