‘MONEY’: Toxic Relationship and Acceptance
Ruben paints his relationship with ‘MONEY’ in his lyrics as one that seems long-suffering and a drag. “…It’s killing me, waiting here on you…”. The lyrics sound like they’re dragging dead-weight, while the instrumental seems to inject the track with all its energy.
This juxtaposition lends itself to this pervasive sense of permanence that the song attempts to convey. This is especially clear in the lines, “…The world isn changing and you won’t disappear…” and “…frankly, I have nowhere to go…I don’t”.
There is a push and pull in ‘MONEY’, that informs its mood and creates a unique tone that helps to pull the listener in. Other than the instrumental, with its lightness and rhythm, its lyrics really underline this almost omnipresent feeling.
“…How did I get here?……i don’t know why…I can’t get on without you…”.
“…You can’t(?) give me everything…But without you what can I do?…I’m so sad that I need you…”.
There’s also an air of defiance that dots ‘MONEY’, without being fully realised as its mood simply flows past. This is evident in the lyric, “…In fact, I disapprove…”. The line is delivered as though its a short-lived realisation, a burst, before the song goes back into its loop.
All in all, ‘MONEY’ by The Chris Ruben Band is an interesting take on what could be seen as a maybe breakup song (of sorts) with money. It’s has bursts of realisation amidst weighted, almost looped sounding lyrics that reinforce a currency’s pervasiveness.
Its a fun listen, with its instrumental, with an interesting perspective in its lyrics.

The Chris Ruben Band is a Setauket, New York-based outfit led bythe titular Chris Ruben. The band is influenced by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Nirvana, Stevie Wonder and Tame Impala. This while their music is explosive and forces you to singalong, involuntarily dance and posts of a unique sound.
