‘Kugti’ by Siyum is a rock-like shoegaze haze that moves through moments that feel like dream-like nostalgia. Melodies sound like the whirl back in reverse in an attempt to capture that moment of almost rapturous delight from sometime in the past.
The song layers synths & strings over almost hypnotic melodies to create a build that feels constant. This slow grind, that feels like it pulls the listener through time, is complimented by a sharp electric guitar solo. The guitar melody sounds filled to the brim with a singular emotion. ‘Kugti’ sounds split in two; the calm rewind, world-building element makes the first half. This while sharp, contrasting emotions makes up the second. The climax seems to cascade between these two halves, building up to an explosion of vibe and sound.
The track’s constant build whirls into a flow of sorts, feeling through emotions as they seem to pass by. The spoken interlude at the song’s climax captures this sentiment. The lines in this section can be roughly translated to the following.
“[Spoken]…Everything feels like a dream,…
…Four days feel like four lifetimes…[]”.
‘Kugti’ by Siyum feels like a step into a whirling, hazy dream that moves back to a transient point in time. Its last seconds seem to play the first moments of this dream back. This moving from a whirry haze to the sounds of a car’s engine speeding off. Then car doors open and shut, communicating that a destination has arrived. That our protagonist can relive a dream-like, amazing memory all over again.
The Artist
Siyum is a multi-instrumentalist based in Himachal Pradesh. He makes music that is highly experimental and free-flowing, blending progressive rock with synth-pop, shoegaze and ambient into a lush immersive soundscape, that evokes nostalgia. His lyrics delve into the intricacies of nature, heartbreak, love, spirituality and introspect on human consciousness.
