‘Palisades’ by Kallai is a Transcendent Post-Punk Rock Experience

‘Palisades’ by Kallai is an ethereal post-punk rock dreamscape that dives into the human urge to guard against future hurt. The song introduces a specific type of frustration in its soundscape.

The word ‘Palisades’ translates to a space enclosed by wooden stakes or iron fences fixed to the ground. In the song ‘Palisades’, the ethos of the song moves from something closed off and frustrated to something open and flowing through. The singer asks their subject if they can let their guard down. They urge their subject singing, “Tell me what you want”.

‘Palisades’ in Structure

‘Palisades’ is a song that constantly builds, with running percussions under deep guitars and droning synth. Its low-pitched vocals are lower in the mix, serving as a base undertone for the soundscape. The tone of the words attempts to soothe the listener.

The song’s long introduction builds up the song’s sonic themes, while the two guitar solos help the song ramp up in intensity. The first guitar solo (right before the second verse) begins this gradual ascend before the second solo seems to subtly change the very nature of the song’s emotion. The movements seem to be from a closed-off frustration to an opening up of deep-seated emotion.

The bridge, which is led in by the song’s second guitar solo, is where things change more significantly. This is where the story resolves and where the narrator seems to move beyond.

All-in-all, ‘Palisades’ by Kallai is a truly transcendent listen. It moves in gradually soothing to the ear while simultaneously building in intensity. Intensity that builds into a moving resolve in the end.

The Artist

Kallai (pronounced ‘call-eye’) is a band formed by the members of Trance to the Sun, Lucious Apparatus and Lost Echoes in the summer of 2023. Their music finds itself in the middle of transcendence and change, suspended in time. Their sound though inspired by post-punk, shoegaze and doom acts of the past constantly evolves from those points of origin.
