‘In-Club’ by Fiona Amaka is a Folk-Rock Track that Grows Past Old Wounds of Rejection

In-Club’ by Fiona Amaka is a folk-rock song that tells a story that begins to grow past wanting to fit in. Its soundscape is warm, while its lyrics describe moments where we’re other.

Moments where there’s this need to unnecessarily question self-worth and self-blame. However, there’s also this sense that our narrator brings in this empowered perspective, a space of strength where they don’t bend to the whims of said “In-Club”.

‘In-Club’: Heal Old Wounds

‘In-Club’ feels like heart-aching growing pains. The song shows us moments when our narrator puts themselves out there, in want of acceptance, but facing rejection However, the lines come from a perspective that seems elevated, resonant with those who have been there, done that.

“…Maybe it’s me who’s got too much

Of something to be accepted into your hallowed space…”.

“…Maybe it’s me who’s got enough

Of something to be sufficient and that’s okay…”.

The lyrics of ‘In-Club’ seem filled with bitter heartache that stems from what feels like a familiar, even distant experience. There’s heartache melding with rejection that feels pervasive. Feelings that need growing through.

The song seems to come from a place that seems spent asking for any sort of acceptance or acknowledgement. Its lyrics feel like the resonate deep with those that have ever felt isolated in a past defined by rejection.

‘In-Club’ by Fiona Amaka  seems to accept that it will always be on the outside looking in. The song seems to make peace with knowing this. But is a bit hurt and bitter too.

 “…There’s no need to say

I’m on the outside here

Not pining for your in-club…”.
