Baaj & Baaj’s artistry lies in their ability to blend 80s pop influences with modern sounds – and their synthwave-infused pop sound is fast making impressions and waves across the world as they continue to work on their sound, and make some legitimately good music. On their Spring version of their latest single, “I Can’t Think”, they bring a very Gesaffelstein-esque dark wave sound to the fore, and succeed– keep reading for my thoughts!
From the start of the track, the synth influence is very there– with tiny sonic trinkets that decorate the atmosphere; and when the bass drops into a delightful phonk-turned synthwave sound, the atmosphere gains a lot of energy, a very welcome add. The pianos in the background also melodiously soundtrack the chords and the bassline, setting the stage perfectly for the vocal presentation.
The vocals are raw, powerful, and emotive– speaking of heartfelt messages and attraction; blend this with catchy melodies in the singing and good amounts of energy that build up and down with the rest of the ensemble, and you have a cohesive enjoyable listen, many rewinds down.

The production takes on this warm, crunchy sound that still retains a great deal of precision, and there is good articulation in the sound. The sound design choices also stand out as striking, with the mix chipping in to elevate the quality. It’s present, it’s loud, and confident in presenting the voice front and centre; while still retaining a good balance between the vocals and the rest of the elements, making for a pleasant listen overall.
