I am the Unicorn Head are a British-American duo from the UK and USA. Indie rock by way of the pandemic, sharing files across the Atlantic. Their music lands somewhere between early Flaming Lips weirdness and the playful side of Grandaddy, with a touch of jangly guitars and DIY production. Their single ‘Omnipresent’ was picked up by Tom Robinson, and played on his national BBC radio Mixtape program. The band have just released their debut album ‘Future Dinosaurs‘ on vinyl via the Krautpop! indie label, and had a track featured on BBC 6 Music ‘New Music Fix’ by DJ Deb Grant.

Their latest, “Angel Faced Arsonist” is built on a true story about a friend who managed to accidentally burn down a school as a kid. The lyrics spin a wild tale with a power packed delivery. I am the Unicorn Head keep things cool with driving alt-rock guitars, a low-key vocal that sits right in the groove, and a melody that’s easy to hum after just one listen. There’s a casual energy, the sort of track you could stick in a playlist next to Beabadoobee, The Cribs, or even those Britpop bands that loved a bit of a mess.
As with other I am the Unicorn Head songs, the production is unpretentious. You can hear the click of collaboration. The band doesn’t overreach, they let the story do the work and wrap it up in fuzzy, loose riffs. There’s an easy charm that’s missing in so much “polished” alternative rock.
“Angel Faced Arsonist” keeps it honest and a little chaotic, the way kids are. That’s really the strength here. I am the Unicorn Head know how to capture character and make it feel like your own weird memory.
