‘Harbour Song’ by The Agency… is a Haunting Folk Tune that Tells a Haunting Tale Through Sing-a-Long Call-and-Response

Harbour Song’ by The Agency… and The Sapphires is a folk duet that tells a beautifully haunting tale through call-and-response. There’s a sense of temptation in the piano-led slow rhythm that imbues the track with a sense of melancholic nostalgia.

Disparate tones come together to create a mood that beckons the listener towards something looming and tempting, like our male narrator being lured towards a haunting female chorus.

‘Harbour Song’: Sing-a-Long

‘Harbour Song’ has a melody that feels as familiar as breathing, its melodies simple enough to sing along almost the first time you listen to it. This familiarity is alluring, something that our male narrator also seems taken by, and drawn towards. The female harmonies simply echo this sentiment, the melody of their lines feels slightly inverted holding in them this sense of give and take.

The male narrator asks a question, while the wispy harmonies answer, almost as though their melodies sound inside our main character’s head like intrusive thoughts. The motives of both voices feel different, like curiosity slowly slipping into temptation. The haunting dialogue feels internal through-out, with an abstract sense of where our narrator could be experiencing his thoughts.

‘Harbour Song’ evokes imagery of a stormy harbour in its soundscape, while its lyrics hold in their tone a sense of detachment tha layers this mood. It feels like walking through a trance, having a blurry sense of where you are and the direction you’re moving. The sensation is haunting suspending the listener at the center of this strange tug and pull.

‘Harbour Song’ by The Agency… uses its refrains to intensify this movement, with harmonies that feel like they don’t fit together but still come together sonically none-the-less. The emotions the song drills through the listener keep them in this suspended state even after the song has ended.
