‘Grey Matter’ is a journey through emotion and feeling, allowing the listener to feel through emotions that are familiar and resonant. Listening to the song is almost like reading a character study, travelling through different facets of our character’s emotional experience before coming back to center a bit changed.
The guitar emotes like lyrics would, beginning with this playful funk that has this slight weight to it. Shadows that add to our character’s light. This playful funk progresses, like any character’s story would, as elements are added to the narrative to tell us more about them.
‘Grey Matter’ then settles into this epic, anthemic mood at its climax. This complete with guitar shredding and this almost intense build in momentum. This moments reaches an bright, loud climax before moving back down to that playful funk that now seems to hold more weight.
Its like the listener experiences the hero’s journey with our sonic hero, seeing them go through an experience that changes them in some way. We end where we started from so that we can see where our character is at by journey’s end.
This is what makes ‘Grey Matter’ by Bob Saganas such an engaging, awe-inspiring listen.
