Shine is the latest dazzling single by the German mystical rock duo MADAME NEPTUNE that packs a tight punch. The band consists of vocalist Liss Eulenherz and guitarist Danny Golebiewski. The group blends psychedelic, modern, hard, and blues rock to give a fresh alternative gothic rock take on the sweet dark side of the human experience. A tasty concoction that will rejuvenate your sense indeed!
The song has an engaging and catchy chorus that does ooze power. The fiery vocals by Liss Eulenherz are performed with much charisma and technical finesse. We get gothic piano chords and phrases which are combined with some tight drums. Guitars on the song are well imbibed being not too prominent but present enough to give the right amount of rock cutting edge. With the spooky and dazzling music video and the entire experience, the song is not merely an aural but a cinematic experience engaging all the senses. Indeed MADAME NEPTUNE is a consciously an art project.
The thematic narrative of the visual and musical project consists of a psychic and the demon Urok, on a journey of catharsis and enchantment. Shine traverses the world of seances, emotions, and divination. They do so while materializing these themes with groove and well-crafted songwriting.
MADAME NEPTUNE manages to blend the modern feel of gothic alternative rock acts like Sioux and the Banshees, The Cure, and more classic blues rock like Blue Öyster Cult and Jimi Hendrix. Shine is about transcending all that holds one back from the perspective of a person with anxiety.
MADAME NEPTUNE creates an inebriating potion of classic-rooted rock music with a cool modern twist.
We got to speak to them about Shine and themselves.
1. Seances, darkness, and divination. Incredibly compelling and groovy. Could you please elaborate on the theme of the song?
Shine is about finding your way and breaking the chains of anyone that is holding you back. It is about an inner transformation, the final touch of empowerment, but you will never know where that power leads to. So we still keeping the mystery of the dangers that could come with such great power. On the other hand, SHINE was written from the perspective of a person with PTSD and anxiety. When there is that one panic attack incoming. When your are feeling it, when your body screams for help but your emotions are just too strong to do anything. Then you have two options: to let it eat you alive or to feel the mentioned transformation. The inner fight but also your personal chance to overcome it.
2. Sioux and the Banshees, The Cure, Evanescence, Lacuna Coil? Who are your musical influences and your musical upbringing in general?
We think you mentioned some really interesting bands. A lot of them had huge impact in our teens. On the other side many old blues and rock/ psychedelic bands are also a big influence to our sound and songwriting, like Blue Öyster Cult, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Robert Johnson and Billie Holiday, just to mention a few. And it´s also super interesting what kind of genres you compared us with. We both grew up in the goth and rock scene as well and were always open for new influences and maybe it shows.
3. What is the story behind the name MADAM NEPTUNE? Could you tell us more about the mythology which you have devised going on with Urok and MADAM NEPTUNE?
MADAME NEPTUNE is literally the story. The music is based on her experience of finding and evolving her own past, power as psychic, a witch, while waking up a dark entity, an old demon called Urok. Urok was asleep for a cantury and her not so planned call had him immediately. He is kinda bounded to her but still has his own unclear goals with her. That is a releationship of gathering power, fighting tricksters and liars, a romance and also dangerous decisions. You never know what you get, colaborating with a demon, do you?
4. We get to hear some really cool arrangements. The song sounds heavy not necessarily much with guitars but with piano. What was the song production process like?
Liss mostly comes up with fully written choruses and storylines for Madame and the wish for a specific energy a song should have. The hardest part in songwriting often is the starting point of that puzzle of lines, emotions and instruments. You want to involve and keep the people from the first second. Having a dark, bluesy piano riff with MADAME NEPTUNEs mellow melody was the perfect start for us to introduce the story and feeling of the song. So we kept the dark piano elements especially for the chorus and spiced it up with an occult guitar melody. So it ended up having a combination of alternative rock, blues, a bit psychedelic and occult rock elements. That is mostly MADAME NEPTUNEs reciepe, our own brewed potion. What we love is to let the song speak to us, to go with the flow and take the emotions back and forth with the instruments. We really focus on a dramaturgical writing to support the storytelling without canceling the energy.
5. What is your approach to live shows as a duo? What are your future music projects?
Before we´ll hit the stage, we want people to feel the immersive world of the band and to know the characters and stories behind them better. Our live debut has the chance to represent everything we dreamed of. You can expect fitting outfits, decor and even special show elements to have that immersion of a collectively séance. There will be more single releases with music videos and photos and artworks until with have a good setup, a bigger fanbase who are wanting us to see live really bad. With live musicians and a show experience, you will have a feeling of what MADAME NEPTUNE is about – not just a concert.
