‘Alpha Male’ by Inviolet Row is a dreamy, yet melancholic 80s punk-inspired rock song that captures yearning in its attempt to entice. The song’s sharp drums and moody guitars like a foregone conclusion with lilts of hope and hurt melding in the song’s spatial soundscape.

‘Alpha Male’: Melancholy 80s Punk Rock
The lyrics open in what sounds like a description of the singer (or their competition) from an external perspective.
“…Who’s that man who was making you slow dance,
While the band was smashing guitars?
So ultra civilised with a criminal heart.
Just a big bad wolf in (a) tuxedo.
His libido off the charts…”.
The lines seem subversive as they list out seemingly iconic media representations of “ideal men”, in franatic yet lucid detail. The singer offers themselves up as a desirable alternative, a calm solution in the midst of all these of choices.
“…You can slow dance into a scandal with the alpha male…”.
‘Alpha Male’ has a sound the feels evocative of stadium rock. This with its dreamy, spaced-out synths that feel like they revolve through the song. In its tug-of-war with an optimistic lightness and dejected rejection, the song situates itself in the third person.
A cocktail of emotion feels like its in constant motion, moving through the motions of its heartache. In its revolving flow and rhythm rests a clear bittersweet sentiment. Rhythmic guitar solos layer ‘Alpha Male’ with an even, layered soundscape that gives the track this dynamic sense of movement.
All in all, ‘Alpha Male’ by Inviolet Row is an enticing love story layered over a dynamic soundscape that takes listeners on a journey. The song makes for a compelling, engaging listen.
