Jay+Max – Octopus | Avant Garde

Imagine for a moment you have your whole life mapped out. You can see the road ahead. You know exactly where you’re going, or at least where people are expecting you to go. Do you drop into cruise control and take the highway or throw a hard right and take that unpaved back road? It will obviously be an adventure, and you might even lose a few followers along the way, but the rewards could well be worth the risk. Jay+Max have not just taken a hard right but a full U-turn, blurring the boundaries of genre and reality. That is what it takes to be avant garde.

Jay+Max took the brave option and ‘Octopus’ is the result. The spiky, gritty, pop like guitar tones with experimental twists gives the song a more pronounced pop sheen. The due have accomplished blending alternate rock with pop without losing any sass or spark. By pop, I don’t mean bright sparkly pop but more of the darkwave pop sheen.

The powerful bassline of the track coupled with vocoded singing creates a “Tron at the beach” vibe, that’s so captivating. The contrast between sounds of nature and gritty basslines is an ingenious and fresh outlook of modern music. Exquisite percussions add a dash of tribal flavor to the song making it dance worthy.

The overall quality of this single remains high with some harmony driven bounce hitting the spot before Jay+Max brings ‘Ocotpus’ to a gentle conclusion. Thanks to strong tunes, interesting choices in the production department and overall personality and delivery of Jay+Max which shines brightly throughout, ‘Octopus’ is one of those avant garde single you really should hear.
