Isaiah Lawrence – Mask | Within, there is Power.

Isaiah Lawrence‘s new track “Mask” is a means for him to communicate his dissatisfaction with the way he was portraying himself, as well as shed light on his identity struggles and trying to evolve as a person. The song has a personal and introspective perspective on the writing, which clearly needs a great deal of strength and bravery to first identify the concerns and then get the confidence to face them. Isaiah Lawrence’s boldness will undoubtedly inspire his admirers to accept themselves as they are and grow from there rather than attempting to modify themselves to fit in with society. Furthermore, the song is admirable in that it addresses society’s stigmas. The writing is intense, and the song’s whole mood reflects that intensity.

The lo-fi pluck texture, which is frequently repeated at various intervals throughout the track, immediately establishes a suspicious vibe. Many aspects of trap music may be found in the production. The rising synth strings tone enhances the motional richness. Delays and reverbs are heavily employed to give the layers a lot of movement, which also helps the mix sound full. The bottom is rock solid. Furthermore, the vocal layers and ad-libs have a huge sonic impact and assist to significantly increase the intensity. There was never an interruption in the song’s flow, and it finished on a strong note. Listeners can immerse themselves in the lyrics and be touched by the words as they progress through the song.

We also have an interview with Isaiah Lawrence to learn more about his writing process, influences, and favourite musicians.

1. What is the purpose of the song “Mask”? What might be the origin of the song’s concept?

Truly the purpose of “Mask” was to help me express my discontent with the way I was presenting myself and in way I allowed myself to address my identity issues and grow from them. The concept of the song and parts of the music video was loosely inspired by the musical “Phantom of the Opera” with the eerie atmosphere and of course the literal mask to help represent the inauthenticity of not being myself.

2. Could you tell me about your songwriting process in a few words? Would you want to talk about your experiences writing the lyrics since the sequencing of the phrases sounds fantastic?

Honestly writing the song was very quick looking back which makes sense when I have like 10 years of research for the topic. And fun fact Mask was the very first song I every wrote in its entirety. When it comes to lyrics of the song it goes from my monologue per-say in the verses and the chorus is my perception of “societies” push back and then the classic climax of the song in bridge basically saying Im going to be myself regardless of the response. One thing that I really like about the song is that it’s not doing too much lyrically making nice and simple to digest.

3. How did you go about writing the arrangement? What was the aspect of the sound that you had the most pleasure shaping?

Writing the song was pretty streamline especially once I got the chorus then everything else fell in place. I think sonically I love the bridge, from the instrumental to the vocal arrangement helping to drive home the lyrics and I couldn’t be more happy.

4. How would you define your musical style? Is there a particular band or artist who inspires you the most?

When it comes to my musical style I think I’m still finding what I really like sonically. I truly believe my biggest musical inspirations are Ariana Grande and Beyonce I simple just love everything about them and their music.

5. Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans regarding the song “Mask”?

“To all my supporters and honestly anyone that listens to “Mask” truly just let the words sink in.
