‘Darkness to a Fairytale’ by Scharliina is a Holistic Indie-Pop Debut that Centers on Healing and Acceptance

‘Darkness to a Fairytale’ is a 8-track indie-pop debut album by Scharliina that bursts with healing vibrations. It goes as far as to rotate through songs using scientifically-proven healing frequencies. The album’s soundscape holds a  deep sense of gravitas, while its lyrics flow through using stream of consciousness writing.

In this vein, the album can be categorised into two frequencies, 432hz (hertz) and 528hz. These frequencies seem to inform the overall tone of the album, with song’s in the later category of the later sounding a bit rounder, fuller than the former. Both these categories work in tandem to build a holistic experience that is transcent and moving.

This while the instrumentation is minimal, using mostly strings and pianos as their main sonic drivers. The track ‘11:11-528hz’ seems to be a notable exception, using an acoustic guitar to much the same effect.

‘Darkness to a Fairytale’-432hz

The first four tracks on the album: ‘Running-432hz’, ‘Little Girl-432hz’, ‘Beauty and the beast-432hz’ and ‘Maybe-432hz’ serve as an introduction to its tone. The frequencies generated by these songs feel like they subtly resonate. This while their melodies and lyrics ground these vibrations in a stream of objective reflection and acknowledgement.

‘Running-432hz’ and ‘Little Girl-432hz’

‘Running-432hz’ introduces the listener to a sense of dakrkness and gravitas. Its lyrics are charged with flows of realisations, seemingly written in retrospect after a lot of soul-searching. It moves from acknowledging a lost state of mind, made clear in the rhetoric “…when did i get so lost?…”

This sentiment then begins to grasp at something beyond. From acknowledging a tendency to run away from themselves to asking “…where do I run to embrace my scars…?”. This song simply encapsulates the album’s theme and reflects on the journey it has been on that the listener is yet to hear.

‘Little Girl-432hz’ continues this journey into what feels like the singer’s mindset. It seamlessly transitions from the first track, with strings and pianos from the first expanding from the same mood. The song is a bit more reflective than the first, telling a specific story that zooms into a particular perspective.

Percussion drums in while the song’s lyrics focus in on a lived experience. “…Nobody’s there to save her life…”. “…They say there’s no cure for the tortured soul on the inside…”.

These two songs give the listener a sense of sonic setting and a protagonist of sorts to follow.

‘Beauty and the beast-432hz’ and ‘Maybe-432hz’

‘Beauty and the beast-432hz’ establishes an external antagonist of sorts, the event that set the protagonist on this journey of self-healing and reflection. It’s tone feels particularly explicit, acknowledging the hurt caused by someone else, while admitting to one-self that they hurt you.

The song seems to hold in it every hurtful thing that’s been done to the protagonist, who has given so much of themselves to this person. But it also acknowledge that “…hurt people hurt people…”. Reflecting on this seems to prime them to move forward.

“…Your therapist told you its time to move on…”.

The final song in the 432hz category, ‘Maybe-432hz’ begins to explore the implications of moving forward. The protagonist is seemingly recognising their inner strength, which is reflected in the instrumentation’s tinge of optimism.

Though she hears in her dreams “…that I’m not good enough…”, something in her tells her otherwise.

“…Maybe I can find myself when I’m lost,

Maybe I can catch myself in the dark…”

The song feels like a turning point, a catalyst of sorts that tentatively begins to stoke and acknowledge a hidden resilience within.

‘Darkness to a Fairytale’-528hz

The second half of the album builds on this tentative burst of empowerment with a fuller frequency that seems to solidify its convictions.

‘Pieces of me-528hz’ and ’11:11-528hz’

‘Pieces of me-528hz’, ‘11;11-528hz’, ‘Paradigm-528hz’ and Fairytale-528hz’ see this journey from darkness to light through. The lyrics in their mode of stream of consciousness seem to flow more confidently, as though the realisations from the first half of the album bolstered the second half.

‘Pieces of me-528hz’ is a particular highlight on the album where the protagonist attempts to reclaim the parts of themselves that they lost along the way. Like ‘Running-432hz’ the lyrics acknowledge where the protagonist’s mind is with the song’s opening line. “…(I’m) 23 and still growing…why do I feel so weak?…”

The lines build on the sentiment on the opening track, reflecting on how they may have been lost for long time. Somebody else took those parts away from them and acknowledging what was lost is where healing begins.

“…The pieces of me I should have learned to love…you stole them…”.

“…Those pieces belong to me…”

‘11:11-528hz’ is the only song on the album that is solely led by an acoustic guitar while the others are primarily led by strings and a piano. This distinction gives it a stripped back mood, that highlights a sense of brokenness in the song’s tone and timbre. An angelic choir bolsters the song’s mood, while its lyrics seem to be confirmation for the healing to come.

The song ends with the line, “…everything you dreamt of comes true…”, seemingly highlighting this epiphany.

‘Paradigm-528hz’ and ‘Fairytale-528hz’

This sentiment leads into ‘Paradigm-528hz’, which sounds like an inquisitive, optimistic dialogue that highlights a significant shift from darkness to light, or a fairytale. There’s am expansive sense of acceptance and self-love, bolstered by self-affirming lyrics that ring throughout.

Two sides of the protagonist seem to reconcile and reconnect in this song, like “…galaxies colliding…”. One voice sings about wanting to reflect deeper into themselves while the other acknowledges how much they’ve grown so far.

One sings, “…I am looking for my masculine-femine side…”. This while the other sings, “…can you see that I’m grown now?…”

The song ends on an optimistic note with the lines,

“…I’ve been stuck in this past paradigm,

But now I’m finding home,

Now I’m growing up…”

This sentiment gracefully leads into the song ‘Fairytale-528hz’, that holds in it a fully realised sense of acceptance. The protagonist seems to surrender to this lightness, basking in this strong sense and belief in their self-love.

“…You are what you believe, and I believe in love…”.

“…I lift my hands up and surrender to love…”

The song ends on an optimistic note with the protagonist/singer stating with a mirthful giggle: “…I’m so grateful…”

Conclusion

‘Darkness to a Fairytale’ by Scharliina feels like a journey that ends too soon, yet it tells a full story that sounds whole and complete. It tells a story that’s fully formed and told in retrospect, that simultaneously feels dynamic and calm on subsequent listens.
