Wellington, New Zealand based singer-songwriter, Alba Rose, known for her involvement in leading indie-pop band Corduroy, in which she toured across NZ playing sold-out shows and supporting international artists. Her solo project began in the early part of 2021, with eclectic compositions that incorporate soul, jazz, and indie influences. Her latest release, titled “Holding On” features groovy beats, amazing instrumentation and playful vocals.
The track begins with a cohesive mix of an electric piano melody, a funky guitar progression and a deep bass that works well with the initial rhythm of the track. Right from the start, there is a sort of relaxed feel and Alba sings in a way that seems to come to her naturally. Her vocal delivery is full of emotion and conversational. The song expresses how it is difficult to let go, and how with a certain amount of optimism, the cycle repeats itself until you keep “holding on”. I think this is something anyone who has ever been in a relationship can relate to. – “I’m loving someone I shouldn’t be, so here we’re going again baby / Cause I’ve been holding on and I know I shouldn’t be”.
While listening to the track, the most striking aspect was how soon after the upbeat chorus, it changed to a mood with a more mellow and emotional feel featuring wide harmonies and a captivating beat change; it almost felt like the track got slower! The EP melodies are excellent. They fit in wonderfully to connect the different sections in “Holding On”. Overall, the track is at it’s core a love song that comprises of a nice array of instruments that compliment each other really well. Towards the end of the track, the beat changes, becoming more lively and exciting.
Alba Rose has been performing and collaborating with musicians for a few years now, and it’s safe to say, she’s very experienced as a songwriter, as is evident from her compositions and lyricism. She is well known for her work in the underground Liquid Drum & bass scene, having collaborating with CSM on two tracks, “Breathe” and “Bring It Back”. Only recently did she start putting out her solo music projects, and I must say, she’s doing a fine job! Hope to hear more from Alba in the near future!
