Leonardo Barilaro – Maleth | Piano Ballad From Space

Italian pianist Leonardo Barilaro brings us an unforgettable piano instrumental song with his latest release Maleth. How many songs could you say have had the distinction of being broadcast to earth from the International Space Station? Well, Maleth did.

The song begins with the song a ticking clock. This soon fades away into beautiful piano lines. Synths that sound ethereal and galactical are added to this sonic canvass. The mood of the piano melody morphs from contemplative to nostalgic and bittersweet. Haunting and evocative are few of the words to describe the fabulous melody. This is something that would have its place in some of Hans Zimmer’s work.

Barilaro is a virtuoso in aerospace engineering and music. He graduated from the Conservatory of Music “Cesare Pollini” as a pianist in Italy. He has also mentored by none other than Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater. All the while fetching a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Padova, researching hypervelocity impacts and space safety. He has had a prolific music career having collaborated with artists like Yossi Sassi, Mariangela Demurtas, and Marco Minnemann. He’s also currently Senior Lecturer at Malta College for Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST). A rare musical and space renaissance man!

For this ambitious project, Leonardo joined forces with Professor Joseph Borg of the University of Malta, head of the Maleth Program. Maleth is the ancient Pheonician word for Malta. With the song Maleth, he has been able to combine his two fields of expertise. The Maleth Program studies the impact of human skin tissue in low earth orbits to study how life adapts in space.

Maleth is a cinematic dark piano piece that will evoke a whole range of emotions in you from the space scientist or rather space pianist!
