Charting his way through the UK underground hip-hop and grime scene since his earlier releases like U Gd? (2020) and Lo & Behold (2020), Wales-based hip-hop artist L E M F R E C K drops what seems to be his breakthrough single Kings.
The track has the advantage of sporting a feature from one of the upcoming names in the grime and hip-hop business — the NME-acclaimed and Stormzy-affiliated INFAMOUSIZAK. Already a promising track just from its outward lineup, the three-minute number is the epitome of a mobilizing upbeat hype-track, exhibiting a sense of collective coterie through the lyricism. With both the rappers each getting their verse, the cypher is supported by a ridiculously catchy and instantly recognizable ominous-like electronic synth rhythm in accompaniment with the track’s drum-n-bass.
The bridges between the two cyphers are held together by a near melancholic rhythm and bluesy interlude, offering the track a finite moment of levitation-like suspension, and then falling back to the hardcore grime element that defines it. Appearing also in a two-track short collective along with one of his latest releases Falling, Kings by L E M F R E C K is a definitive incarnation of the mood of the UK’s grime and hip-hop scene — a dialogue that he does very well to add on to.
