“Disco Sally” by Ralphy: Sultry 80s RnB, served with a side dish of feel-good disco

Ralphy, the indie pop sensation from Australia, has been gaining recognition in the United States since her debut in 2016. She swiftly made a name for herself in the Los Angeles music scene with her intense, emotionally charged music and live shows. Ralphy’s unique style combines retro glam with a contemporary edge, and her music effortlessly crosses genres, encompassing sultry R&B, moody ’80s new-wave, and dance-floor anthems with a disco flair. On her latest single, “Disco Sally”, she proudly continues to embody the sound that she’s quickly gaining a reputation for. Keep reading for my thoughts!

True to new-wave tradition, the basses are a big part of this production. They make themselves heard from the first second of the song, with Ralphy’s distinctive voice forming the layer on top. The low-end is filled with a lot of interesting little elements that get it stuck in your head with what seems like not much effort at all– and that, is a great thing! Ralphy’s voice and adlibs form the perfect layer on top, and this is evident through the run of the song.

Take all the good things I said about the bass, and layer it with a drum line that takes you firmly back to 70s and 80s disco and dancehall music; and you have a rather potent concoction in your hands, with more than enough potential to become an earworm; and over my time listening to this song, that is what I felt coming onto me; “Disco Sally” just gets stuck in your head, and much to your pleasure– and I wholly appreciated that.

The mixing and mastering, are, as well, what hold this track together effectively. From making the sudden, dramatic string runs that dot the song, to Ralphy’s adlibs that waft pleasantly all over the stereo image, the control that this mix exhibits is remarkable. There is just enough space in this mix to not make you feel boxed into two channels, and yet manages to strike the balance so as to not sound like the drama was happening miles away. Bravo!

Overall, my thoughts about “Disco Sally” are largely positive; to the point where I’d say that it definitely deserves a spot on your top 5 this week. Check out the song here!
