‘CBAYAOM’ by fxrrvst is a light indie-pop track that uses its lightness to describe the pressure of meeting someone’s expectations. Tremulous strings, cascading guitars and fast-paced percussion characterise the song’s instrumentation, capturing its youthful spirit. This while its lyrics juxtapose that airy mood with lines weighed down by heavy expectations.

‘CBAYAOM’: Lyrics and Melody
The strings in the intro betray a heavy sense of foreboding before the other instruments come in. They lend a heavy tone that though low in the mix feels present throughout the track as it progresses. The guitars give the song a lightness that helps the track feel easy to listen to, while the percussion keeps the song’s overall mood steady.
The lyrics on ‘CBAYAOM” on the other hand, describe keep up the foreboding established by the strings in the intro. They expound on the theme, that feels similar to the theme of Linkin Park’s ‘Numb’. The song is from the perspective of a young person who is tired of the heavy weight of expectation they are forced to carry.
This is evident throughout the track but especially in the looped refrain, “…I can’t be all you ask of me…”.
The singer feels like they’ve got “…one leg shorter than the other…”, like they can’t keep up. But they also express their commitment to the person they’re addressing, “…as long as you need me, I’ll come running…”. These lines express the contrasting emotions in ‘CBAYAOM’.
The Tension that isn’t Resolved
There is a sense of tension on ‘CBAYAOM’ that isn’t resolved by the end of the track, but is rather what the track chooses to highlight. The lines on the bridge are the lowest the song’s lines go, “…can you not feel it?…its not me anymore…can you not feel it?…I’m gone.” Then the instrument breaks for a moment before the refrain (“…I can’t be all you ask of me…”) rushes back in to cap off the song.
What ultimately highlights the tension of the two opposing moods of the song are the strings that sustain even after the song resolves.
‘CBAYAOM” by fxrrvst is a track that contradicts itself. It captures the tension of not identifying with the persona that’s being projected on you. It relays this push and pull dynamic with a youthful instrumental under the weight of heavy lyrics.
