KillJoy, the Reading-based rapper with a diverse heritage blending Caribbean, Pakistani, Greek, and Caucasian roots. Inspired by a range of artists from Central Cee to DJ Quik, his latest track ‘Capricorn’ brings a confident, smooth-flowing UK Rap sound — keep reading for my thoughts!
As is the case with drill music, the beat is the central factor to a good production — and KillJoy’s self-taught production comes quite into handy here, with a smooth, rounded bass leading the melodic base of the track, with somber pianos and pads contributing further to the atmosphere of the track with just the right amount of ear candy with the Mario coin sounds. Couple this with the tasteful breaks and scratching, and the beat on “Capricorn” sets the stage quite elegantly for the vocals.

The vocals top the rum off with just the right amount of coke for the smoothest Cuba Libre you’d have had — KillJoy adopts a deeper-pitched, slower and more deliberate flow on “Capricorn”, taking the listener for a ride with his complex, multifaceted rhyming that retains a great bit of sing-along-ability (if that is a word, heh) and Y.XRxven brings in the second verse, switching up the smoother flow of KillJoy for a more aggressive, rhyming-first flow, making for quite the nice energy equation on this track.
The mixing and mastering on this track incorporate a delightful mix of creative and technical decisions that make for an innovative approach to mixing that results in a well-rounded, smooth-flowing and rather well-polished sound throughout “Capricorn”. There’s excellent control down low, with sparkly highs, and the energy of the vocals is front and centre, all for your delight.
