‘Call It Falling’ by Emily Ricks is a Pop-Rock Track that Oozes Spunk

‘Call It Falling’ by Emily Ricks is a pop-rock track dripping with sass and attitude that seems influenced by the trendy pop-punk rock sound of the 2000s. Its lyrics tell the story of the aftermath of a break up, with and angry spunk that is pretty fierce.

The guitars and percussion on the song are quick and raw, almost frustrated, while its lyrics reflect on another love gone by. Ricks sings about the moments right after a break-up that make her reflect on her past relationships too.

‘Call It Falling’: Heartbreak and Sass

“…Looks like I got my heart broken again,…

…Promised myself this wouldn’t happen again…”.

The emotions initially feel like a shift of sorts, “…like a meteor fell out of the sky…”: But that feeling is momentary and is immediately put to rest in the second verse with these lines:

“…Played with my feelings just like they were toys,

Fell in love with a man, broke up with a boy…”.

‘Call it Falling’ seems to take on a bit of reflective tone, that’s heavily sort of pulled along with its kinetic sass. Ricks realises that her love-interest “…played with my feelings like they were toys…”. That she, “…fell in love with a man, broke up with a boy…”.

This while the refrain acknowledges that the singer’s hope in loves seems fantastical as she likens herself to Alice from ‘Alice in Wonderland’. But like the song does earlier, she is almost immediately brought down to Earth to describe being, “…face first on the ground…, blood on the concrete…”

She ponders if she’s “…just a sad girl wondering if he’s calling…”. The singer guesses that “…that’s why they call it falling…”

All in all, ‘Call It Falling’ by Emily Ricks brings in a punk-rock/pop sensibility to describe her heartbreak. This while capturing the sharp bitterness in her reflections of love and heartache. These elements make for a compelling listen.

“…Am I in love or jumping off a cliff?…”.
