‘Café Réfugié’: Track-by-Track
‘Café Réfugié’ (pt. I)
‘Café Réfugié’ begins with ‘Say Hello When You See Them-Nthariza’ that introduces us to this collective theme of togetherness with each line being sung in unison. Subtle percussion highlights these voices while also building in this flow of energy that seems to sustain throughout the EP.
This while ‘Na Yingi Yo, Mama’, which is a dedication to one of our narrator’s mothers, veers towards something a bit quieter. Its a love letter from a grateful child “…for everything you done for me mama…”. Our voices in unison support this expression of gratitude. This while keeping up the energy with up-tempo rhythms and beats layered under a lovely, longing piano melody.
‘We Can Do Better’ marks this climax of the ‘Café Réfugié’, with its percussion-heavy groove and funky guitar rhythms. Its lyrics hold in them this message of unity in community, urging us all to see beyond our differences and do better for eachother.
“…I say aahh, you say yeaah.
You can do better, I can do better,
We can do better…”.
This song seems to capture the message at the EP’s core, allowing the music to transcend singular borders with its unifying message.
