Portuguese indie singer-songwriter Bash Co. released Velvet on March 22, 2026. The acoustic rock love song was inspired by a trip to Prague and draws from the history of the Czech capital while telling a story of enduring love through difficult times. Bash Co. has been making solo music since 1999 while working as a schoolteacher and playing in a Portuguese band for over a decade.

Velvet opens with a warm soft-rock acoustic sound, like opening the curtains of an old window in winter and looking outside. The room feels warm behind you, but outside everything is cold, the streets are quiet, and the lamps are just starting to light up.
The lyrics, “The cold grows old over the bridge of gold…Echoes through the air,” paint a Prague frozen in time. You can almost see the old statues standing above the streets, snow sitting between the cobblestones, and someone walking through the city with their hands tucked into their coat.

It keeps mixing this cold, old city with the feeling of being in love. Then, “Because it’s you in velvet…Revolution in my heart” makes love feel like its own revolution, something that breaks through whatever is standing in its way. Then there is “A cage in search of a bird,” is another striking image, making me think of someone looking for freedom, but not knowing exactly where to find it. Finally, Velvet feels like finding warmth in another person while the whole city freezes outside.
