Bei Bei Interview Questions for Sinusoidal Music

  1. What was your original inspiration for creating the mystical concept of “Two Moons” – the single that was just released?

The inspiration for Two Moons – the title track of my forthcoming album came during the 2024 Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, a time when families in Chinese culture gather to celebrate togetherness under the brightest moon of the year. I was alone in my studio that evening, improvising on music Paul Elliott had sent me, and as I played, all my emotions about distance, home, and connection flowed into the guzheng.

When I finished recording, I looked out my kitchen window and saw something magical — a full moon shining in the sky and its reflection on the glass. Two moons, side by side, suspended in harmony. That image struck me deeply and became the heart of the project. To me, it symbolizes duality and unity — earth and sky, past and present, reality and reflection, distance and closeness. Two Moons grew from that vision: a soundscape of emotion, memory, presence, and unity across space and time.

2. What is the central idea of the album ‘Two Moons’? How would you describe the album in a few words?

Two Moons represents the moon and its reflection. As seen in the photograph I took that night for the cover art, the two don’t look exactly the same. To me, they symbolize our physical self and our true self. The physical self is only a reflection of the true self — it’s not who we really are. Our true self exists on a higher level, yet without the physical self, we wouldn’t be able to perceive it. It’s like seeing ourselves through a mirror. This album is a reflection of who Paul and me are. It reveals our vulnerability, musical sensibility, courage, focus, sadness, and joy.

Two Moons is an album that transcends time, culture, and genre. It blends the 2,500-year-old tradition of Chinese string instruments with immersive modern sound design, creating a cinematic sonic landscape that reimagines the spirit of China in the modern world.

3. How does your creative process look like? Is it a meticulous, thought-out approach, or do you often find inspiration from the mundane and the spontaneous?

For Two Moons, my creative process was a blend of structure and spontaneity. Sometimes the inspiration came from the music Paul had already created for me — I simply listened and improvised. Other times, I began with a feeling or a sound that sparked something inside me — it could be a passing emotion or a melody that appeared unexpectedly while I was practicing. From there, I followed the energy and let the music unfold naturally.

Once the core idea took shape, I became more meticulous — layering textures, refining details, and shaping the emotional arc of each piece. To me, creativity is about balance: allowing inspiration to flow freely while having the discipline to sculpt it into something refined and cohesive.

4. You are exceptional with the guzheng instrument., What was your motive for picking up and mastering this ancient instrument?

I first heard a friend playing the guzheng when I was six years old. I instantly fell in love with its beautiful sound and knew I wanted to learn how to play it. At that time, not many people were studying this traditional Chinese instrument.

5. Describe your art to someone who is stepping into your musical world for the first time.

My music is a bridge between worlds — where the ancient and the modern, the East and the West, meet and converse. I use the guzheng and guqin, two traditional Chinese instruments, as my voice to tell stories that are timeless yet contemporary.

When you step into my musical world, you’ll hear the resonance of Eastern strings intertwined with funky and jazzy grooves, atmospheric electronic textures, cinematic soundscapes, and deep emotion.

It’s music that flows between serenity and intensity, meditation and movement — a place where tradition transforms into something new, personal, and universal.

6. How has your musical journey been so far? Has it been smooth or unpredictable? What has been your biggest takeaway from all the years as an artist?

My musical journey has been wonderful, though not always easy. I feel very fortunate to still be pursuing a career as a musician today. It hasn’t been a smooth path — in my early twenties, I actually gave up on being a musician for a time. But after coming to the United States, I gradually rediscovered my confidence and passion for music.

When I first arrived here, my goal was to become a recording engineer. I never imagined that I would return to performing. Yet twenty years later, here I am — still doing what I love most: playing and creating music.

My biggest takeaway from all these years as an artist is that everyone’s path is unique. Some artists find success early, while for others, it unfolds later in life. What truly matters is staying true to your passion. Give yourself time to grow, keep refining your craft, and never give up on what you love.

In this process, be authentic — don’t copy or compare yourself to others. Trust your talent and your gift, and develop your own unique sound and style. There are many guzheng players and composers, but there is only one Bei Bei.

7. Tell us a little about your future projects? Is there anything upcoming for your fans to look forward to?

Look out for my Two Moons album release on February 20, 2026! The album features all original music and showcases my diverse and dynamic range as a musician — I can’t wait to share it with the world.

In addition, I’ll be composing and performing music for an upcoming TV series. I can’t reveal the title yet due to a confidentiality agreement, but I can share that the story revolves around Hong Kong’s high society.
