Zaery raises the Bar for Afro Pop music with ‘Rasta’

Zaery is an emerging, talented Afrobeat artist known for blending Sudanese East African music with contemporary freshness to create music that stands apart. He is renowned for his unique take on Sudanese music. With simplicity, yet infectious beats, and hook-worthy melodies, Zaery has created a sound of his own that stirs the soul even for first-time listeners. Groove-oriented and full of lyrical charm, Zaery’s music makes a difference.

Recently, Zaery released an EP called ‘Rasta’, featuring four incredible songs that are hook-driven and thrive on a distinctive vibe. The songs build a unique character and a charismatic persona simply through immersive sounds. Instead of relying on songwriting and emotive verses, the tracks create an impact through Afrobeat rhythms and heavy bass. Establishing a mood almost instantly, each track works beautifully in creating an extremely atmospheric feel. With upbeat, contagiously joyful percussion in songs like “Alrasta solo”, the EP navigates joy in a rather youthful, jovial tone. The rhythmic foundation of the tracks creates an ebb and flow of sounds that together weave musical bliss that’s rare. The catchy vocal nuances add to the sonic depth even further, establishing a sonic firmness that lingers throughout the EP. The artist renders his ingenuity to the tracks in every way, be it through the genius lucidity in the sounds, the brilliant amalgamation of retro and modern Afro motifs, and a celebratory spirit that remains consistent throughout.

What’s also admirable is the stunning sonic cohesiveness that the EP maintains throughout its length. Every track feels like a part and parcel of the same story, with similar musicality but distinctive in their own, blissful ways. A fun, infectious energy governs the pace of the entire EP, and what attracts the listener the most is the carefree spirit of the songs that one gets hooked to almost instantly!

We recently interviewed Zaery regarding the album; here’s what he said:

  1. Your album is a beautiful instrumental rendition of modern music; tell us about the journey of curating something like ‘Rasta’

My vision with Rasta was to help modernize Sudanese youth music and bring a fresh perspective to contemporary Zaniq sounds. The journey was all about exploring new ideas, experimenting with different musical elements, and searching for something unique that could stand out from what already exists.

I wanted to create instrumental music that respects the roots of Sudanese culture while introducing a modern sound that connects with younger generations. Curating the album was a long process of selecting the right melodies, emotions, and influences, always pushing myself to find a sound that felt original and unlike anything else. For me, Rasta represents both innovation and cultural evolution—a step toward the future of Sudanese music.

2. How do you aim to utilise the art of music to the benefit of your listeners? Do you think that music has some special purpose?

I believe music is one of the most powerful ways to connect people, emotions, and cultures. Through my music, I aim to inspire listeners, bring them positive energy, and create moments where they can feel understood without the need for words.

For me, music has a special purpose. It can preserve culture, tell stories, heal emotions, and unite people from different backgrounds. As an artist, I want my work to contribute to the evolution of Sudanese music while staying connected to its roots. If a listener feels motivated, comforted, or inspired after hearing my music, then I believe the music has fulfilled its purpose.

3. Tell us about your favorite project that you have worked on so far.

One of my favorite projects so far is Zyko, an EP that holds a special place in my artistic journey. The project is built around pure African dance music, celebrating rhythm, energy, and the rich musical heritage of the continent.

What makes Zyko special to me is the creative process behind it. I wanted to create music that feels vibrant, uplifting, and capable of bringing people together through movement and shared experiences. The project allowed me to explore new sounds while staying connected to African musical roots.

Zyko represents my passion for innovation and my commitment to creating music that is both authentic and modern. It is a project that reflects who I am as an artist and the direction I hope to take Sudanese and African-inspired music in the future.

4. What is the idea behind “Rasta”?

The idea behind Rasta was to create a project that could reach a wider audience and introduce a modern African-inspired sound to listeners around the world. My goal was not only to produce great music but also to help bring Sudanese youth culture and contemporary Zaniq influences onto a global stage.

Through this album, I wanted to showcase the creativity and diversity of a new generation of young listeners and artists who appreciate different styles of music. By incorporating strong African elements, rhythms, and influences, Rasta reflects both cultural identity and musical innovation.

The album represents my desire to push boundaries, connect with international audiences, and prove that Sudan’s emerging youth music scene has a unique voice that deserves global recognition. It is a celebration of diversity, creativity, and the evolving future of African music.

5. If someone is listening to your music for the first time, what would you tell them? Give them a little introduction.

If you’re listening to my music for the first time, I would simply ask you to keep an open mind and let the music take you on its own journey. My sound is inspired by African rhythms, Sudanese culture, and the energy of today’s generation.

As an instrumental artist, I tell stories through melodies, emotions, and movement rather than words. You’ll hear influences from modern Zaniq music, African dance sounds, and my own vision for where Sudanese music can go in the future.

More than anything, I want you to feel something—whether it’s excitement, nostalgia, joy, or inspiration. If my music makes you move, think, or connect with a part of yourself, then you’ve understood exactly what I’m trying to share.

6. What are your aspirants as an artist? What gives you delight as a musician?

My aspiration as an artist is to take my music to a global audience while introducing new ideas and fresh creative perspectives to the music world. I want to collaborate with artists from different cultures and backgrounds, because I believe music is a universal language that becomes stronger when diverse influences come together.

I am also passionate about expanding my understanding of music and vocal expression, while helping to shape the future of modern Sudanese Zaniq music. One of my long-term goals is to leave behind a meaningful legacy and build a large catalogue of innovative music that future generations can learn from and enjoy.

What brings me the most joy as a musician is the connection I have with listeners. There is nothing more rewarding than receiving messages from fans who tell me that my music has inspired them, energized them, or become part of their lives. Their support motivates me to keep creating and constantly improve as an artist.

Looking back, one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey has been reaching a wide audience after more than eight years of dedication to music. Performing and connecting with people across Sudan, as well as in countries such as the UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, has been an incredible experience. Seeing audiences from different places embrace my music has given me even more confidence, positivity, and motivation to continue pushing forward and aiming higher.
