1. Hey Damon, congrats on the release of ‘Holy.’ I’m digging the whole vibe. How did you approach it?
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed. Well, I was playing around in the key of Bb when I played a little leitmotif you hear in the beginning of the song. For some strange reason, that musical phrase a relationship from years ago and the word holy came out of my mouth. I wrote the chorus in under twenty minutes. It just came to me all at once really. I walked away for about a week because I didn’t know what the verse would be. By the end of the week, though, I thought it should be either rap or spoken word. That changed my mindset significantly and I began to write the first verse. About 2 hours later I’d written the first and second verses. The third verse came a week later.
2. What was your goal in creating it?
My goal is always to tell the story of a relationship that was very different from any other; the empowerment, the vulnerability, the safety, the transcendental nature of that moment in my life. I’m always curious as to whether people will resonate with the words and musical experience.
3. Do you have a favorite lyric from it?
Definitely the first line of the last verse. That’s where I give you the chords to the song. I knew that’s what I wanted to do from the beginning, but I was unsure how. That’s also why the last verse took significantly longer than the rest to finish. But all of a sudden, the words just came to me and the final verse was complete.
4. What or who inspired you to write ‘Holy’?
A lover…a lover that saw me completely, accepted me fully, and virtually worshipped me in mind, body, and spirit. It was different to feel both vulnerable and powerful. That experience inspired “Holy”.
5. I read that you have toured and performed all across the globe. Any memory of your performances/tours around the globe you’d like to share with us?
Yes, my most recent tour of Mexico was magnificent. I always love performing in Mexico. This time, though, I got to perform with two of my favorite artists, Natalia Marrokin and Mario Cruz. Both of whom where on La Voz Azteca (The Voice in Mexico) a couple of seasons ago. Also, guitarist and singer Cedric Huesca. The whole band was stellar Mexican musicians with great chops across genress. They’re great generous super talented colleagues and they supported me so graciously during the tour. I love them!
6. Being on stage at the Grammy awards with Paula Cole and Andrea Wallace would have been a dream come true for you. Can you tell us what it was like?
Well I wasn’t on stage at the Grammy awards. I got to open for multi-time Grammy nominee and 1 time winner, Paula Cole. As for Andrea Wallace, I’ve sung with her many times. She is a brilliant vocal musician, songwriter and friend.
7. “Random Lover” received a lot of praise. Will there be more songs like this in the future?
Yes. I’m so grateful “Random Lover” is resonating with people. Besides “Random Lover” and my latest single, “Holy”, I’m working on another release called “I’ll Blame Myself”. I hope to get that out in late May.
8. Is there a genre of music that you would like to explore?
That’s a good question. Honestly, I have sung (and still sing) every genre I’ve ever wanted to sing. Besides Pop, R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, I am also a professional Opera/Classical singer. I’ve sung with chamber groups, orchestras, and opera companies off and on throughout my career.
