The Unbeat Soul – Glance | Comfortable Sadness

Its always exciting to hear a new artist, especially if its their debut single. ‘The Unbeat Soul’ is one such fresh project from Stephen Langstaff. Music is a means to a stir and create emotions for Stephen. He has this unbelievable talent of being able to stimulating your amygdala to pour out emotions of sadness. It is music that just permeates the soul of the listener plunging them into an abyss of sadness and melancholy that is in its own way pleasurable and comforting. What a way to connect with the audience. A comfortable sadness is probably the best feeling and also the best way to describe Stephen’s music.

Stephen is based out of London and is a singer/songwriter that produces, sings and plays all the instruments in the music he releases. The Unbeat Soul is a project that started in the first lock down and are we glad it did. He has a few singles that are upcoming and are all produced by him, and a couple of musician friends who add pedal steel and piano.

The vocals are absolutely ethereal and just send tingles down my spine. The piano just adds to this and makes it complete. Its like Stephen has found his calling and his music is just an effortless extension of his thoughts. This is a very hard feat to actually achieve. Lets go into the lyrics now, especially one line. “If you think I don’t need you, take another glance”. Wow! A song that speaks about how you need other people no matter how strong or capable you are. If you disagree, then take another glance, you’ll find that it’s the people around you that have helped you get where you are and become who you are. This is something we all need to realize and what a beautiful way Stephen has found to do so. He puts you in this state of comfortable sadness and whispers it to you!

A song that can change the mood of any situation with Stephens beautiful voice and piano. An absolute banger that I’m going to play on repeat for a while, just to hear Stephen’s voice and to drown in the comfortable sadness that he creates. Check it out below!
