Traditional Meets Electronic: An Dannsa Dub’s ‘Through The Storm’ Breaks All Boundaries

Formed in 2020, An Dannsa Dub, led by Tom Spirals and Euan McLaughlin, has made a significant impact on the music scene. Nominated twice for Live Act of the Year at the Scots Trad Awards and the ’23 SAMAs, the band is celebrated for blending the mystical sounds of Gaelic song and traditional Scottish instruments with pulsating rhythms and deep basslines of digital dub. They have electrified audiences at major festivals, including Glastonbury, Celtic Connections, Dubcamp in France, and Goa Sunsplash in India. Their self-titled EP, released in 2021, received airplay from notable DJs like Don Letts and Craig Charles. Their debut album, “Air An Turas,” released in 2023, features unique collaborations, including one with Cian Finn, earning rave reviews and extensive BBC airplay, further solidifying their global presence.

An Dannsa Dub band is back with a new album “Through The Storm” featuring 12 songs. An Dannsa Dub opens “Through The Storm” with a stunning statement in “The Storm Gathers.” This violin-driven opener packs an incredible emotional punch in just 2:51 minutes. The instrumentation alone tells a complete story of pain and self-reflection, showing how powerful purely instrumental music can be. The production creates such dramatic tension and release that it truly sweeps you into its world.

“Low Down In The Broom” by An Dannsa Dub shifts gears effectively, bringing Rachel Newtone’s vocals into the mix. Her performance carries both sass and deep feeling, matching perfectly with the track’s teasing, groove-focused instrumental base. The band’s decision to blend electronic atmospherics with folk elements proves inspired – it’s not just a mix of styles but a genuine fusion that creates something fresh.

“Solasta” showcases An Dannsa Dub’s brilliant ability to surprise and delight. The track’s slow build into traditional folk sets you up for one style, then pulls off an amazing switch into EDM territory that’s both unexpected and perfectly executed. This isn’t just genre-mixing – it’s the kind of transformation that makes you want to hit the dance floor immediately. Ross Ainslie and Horseman’s contributions help make this transition feel natural and exciting.

“I, Of the Storm” (with Lewis McLaughlin) changes the mood expertly. McLaughlin’s vocals become the heart of the song, while dreamy riffs, gentle beats, and string arrangements create a sense of peaceful escape. It’s like being transported to a peaceful beach where time moves differently. The violin solo in the second half elevates the whole piece. Icing on the cake!

“Kick Up the Dust” by An Dannsa Dub lives up to its title, bringing the energy right back up. Josie Duncan’s opening vocals against that mysterious electronic backdrop create perfect tension – you can feel something big coming. When it hits at 0:25, the fusion of violin strings with electronic elements creates pure magic. This is dance music that doesn’t just invite movement – it demands it, making head-banging almost involuntary. The production makes every element shine while keeping that infectious rhythm front and center.

“Till Slàn” serves as the perfect album closer, like a gentle landing after an incredible journey. Duncan’s vocals here take on a different quality – soothing and meditative – while the atmospheric instrumentation creates a sense of floating. After all the high-energy tracks, this feels like exactly what the listener needs – a chance to breathe, reflect, and drift away. It’s the musical equivalent of a cool-down after an amazing workout, letting the mind and body settle into a peaceful state.

“Through The Storm” is a complete experience that shows what’s possible when traditional music meets modern production with real vision behind it.
