WhiteRoomNightmare is a solo project of the artist Paul Anketell, who is from Northern Ireland. Expanded his music from alternative metal to a more narrative-based storytelling with fine rock motifs and pop influences, the artist writes, performs, and produces his songs on his own. What his fans love about his music is its free-spirited nature and his willingness to experiment.
Recently, WhiteRoomNightmare released an album called ‘Ad Lunam’, an ambitious concept album that straightaway takes you into a world of science fiction novella, where you meet an astronaut set out to colonise the moon. What outshines everything else is the album’s beautiful, emotive quality, which taps into the isolation, fear, and hope of wandering in a place completely strange, away from home.
Seamlessly blending metal, progressive rock, grunge and alternative metal, the album explores the darkness of deep space through atmospheric sounds that have an enveloping effect on the listener. The surreal melodic passages add a palpability to the songs that’s too rich to be ignored. The pauses in between convey the eeriness of space and the silences that sometimes occur hauntingly. Lucidly grasping the psychological tension as much as the physical, the songs carry you through the entire journey, bit by bit, evoking all sorts of emotions through an array of rich rock soundscapes. “SpaceCadet” and “Second World Problems” introduce the narrative beautifully, throwing the listener into the world of space and galaxies right away. While “Where Only Machines Have Been” is a song that pulls you in further and demands complete attention as well as surrender to the sonic richness and narrative unfurling. A stunning work on the guitars elevates the song’s tension drastically, while other sonic motifs introduced here and there add to the substance further. On the other hand, “To Dust Returnes” is a song that offers a laid-back yet fitting conclusion to the entire journey, beautifully encapsulating all the emotions that the album evoked up until then.

The echoing vocals and smooth pacing add to the atmospheric richness of the songs, and the layered guitars contribute perfectly to the songs’ nuanced storytelling. With deeply meaningful songwriting at play, every sonic richness is amplified manifold. The avant-garde style of production that WhiteRoomNightmare has made use of brings to light the beautiful, fun, and experimental side of metal and rock, like never before. Meant for deeper contemplation and late-night listening, the album reimagines rock like never before!
