You’re going to rejoice with Sapsei in their latest single. This is a project that is a perfect infusion of pop into some of the most instrumentally dextrous jazz you will listen to. A song that is full of mirth, questioning and, most importantly, existential questions of philosophy, today we’re listening to 這條魚同果條魚有乜唔同 (WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS FISH AND THAT FISH?). Here’s what they have in store for you.
Party, with this J-pop
Sapsei and Wing Chan have been able to divulge a whole series of subgenres of tracks. With this Cantonese debut, Sapsei is moving from Japanese roots to create a track that has a different element to resonate with. With a funky instrumental core, you’re treated to some great instrumental background elements. There are time signature pauses and creative routes where the music can make you want to dance. Production quality is enticing, where Wing Chan has been able to produce an elevating number with Sapsei.
A short, over 2-minute number has more instrumental and style changes than any regular pop song you’ll listen to. In Cantonese, the lyrics might have deeper meaning than we’ll ever know, but it’s great to hear J-pop elements intertwine with a different range of elements. Sapsei might have roots in Guangdong, but since shifting to Tokyo has imbibed a whole series of cards of inspiration. There’s no doubt this debut is a pathway to many more great numbers and grooves to come.
You can also listen to i want to jump into the sea of people and swim and Endofterm Party as other textures to explore their music. This is a route to inspiring, groovy and frankly music that truly carries passion. Listen to the track here:
