ReeToxA Turns a Chance Encounter into Indie Rock Gold “The Lisa Song”

“The Lisa Song” by Australian Band ReeToxA begins like a memory in motion. The first piano keys instantly stir a deep familiarity, echoing the warmth of The Beatles’ classic “Here Comes the Sun”, not as an imitation, but as a wink towards musical innocence. It feels like opening an old photo album only to realise that one picture is still alive. What begins as a soft glow of recognition quickly evolves into something intimate that carries the power to change you.

Originally, “The Lisa Song” was introduced as a part of Soliloquy, the ambitious second album from Melbourne-based songwriter Jason McKee. Now the song appears as a separate album, along with “The Lisa Song (Karaoke)”. Jason built ReeToxA around a fascinating tension; it was all about blending the heart and grit of old-school indie rock with melodies and storytelling that resonates with the present moment. The artistic balance in this newly released album feels effortless. Musically, “The Lisa Song” shines with shimmering pop-pop energy. The pianos are gentle, the guitar riffs softly, and the melodies drift with a sweetness. But the real strength of the number lies in its storytelling.

In a recent interview, Jason explained the story behind the song in his own words:
“I met Lisa at a Spiderbait show at the Forum in December 2019. It’s a long story, but basically, I’d been stood up on a date and was in a bad mood. Lisa was so kind and made me laugh. I was taking a picture of the show, and Lisa stepped in front of the camera and waved. The stage lights behind her made it look like the sun. I started writing and singing the song on my phone. Lisa asked me what I did for a living, and, embarrassed, I told her I was a college student and a songwriter. She asked to hear a song, but all I had were voice notes. That night, I dropped out of college and booked studio time to record my first album. Then COVID hit, and I started writing my second album. Lisa inspired me to write better songs and changed my life.”

To me, Lisa, not necessarily need to be a person alone, but an experience. A symbol, a collision of attraction, confusion, confidence, and an emotional wild ride. But knowing that Lisa was real, who unknowingly pushed Jason towards becoming the artist he is now, is moving. She is like a spark that turns an ordinary evening into a story that you get to tell your grandchildren.

Through Jason’s vivid imagery and playful lyricism, we, the listeners, get to meet this person and experience a chance encounter that transforms into something unforgettable. There’s flirtation, humour, nervous honesty, and that unmistakable electricity of instant connection. The song unfolds as the scene from an independent film you wish had lasted longer. The story is even more captivating in the video, where contemporary dance captures the emotional fragility of that encounter. Yet “The Lisa Song” refuses to give us a fairy-tale ending, as the two never meet again.

With classic rock DNA, modern indie grit, and storytelling, “The Lisa Song” and “The Lisa Song (Karaoke)” by ReeToxA leave a lingering sense of longing. Follow the band on Instagram and listen to their songs, now streaming on all major music platforms.
