‘Night’s Cross’: Track-by-Track
‘Night’s Cross’: ‘Save Me’-’Diana’
‘Save Me’ begins with this build of raw, dynamic energy that foreshadows story beats through the album. These spiralling into guitar melodies that feel a bit off-kelter at certain intervals and play with tempo throughout the track to create this moody atmosphere. The mood reflects our narrator’s headspace at this time and foreshadows where this spiralling mindset could lead down the line.
‘Suzie’ is the first of three songs that capture the personality of someone our narrator has spiralled into an obsession with. The addictive guitar melodies allude to a personality that feels strong because she’s in the know. She’s ambitious and tenacious and knows what she wants and goes after it.
“…Suzie was a fine girl with diamonds in her eyes…”.
‘Dora Lee’ introduces a deep, dynamic stomping groove in its guitar melodies to complement the girl it talks about. She’s someone who seems to have captivated our narrator, leaving an impact on them that seems to last. “…She put a mark on my soul, that I can’t deny…”.
“…Well Dora Lee, there’s nothing in my mind except you…”.
‘Diana’ feels like the last of the three parter, and the most ominous. The guitars on the track feel almost intense as they build, while the narrator’s delivery on the lines feels frustrating and long-suffering. The lines betray the spiral Diana put our narrator through.
“…We met in the darkest of ages…
….Down in the darkness with echoes of whales,
Picked up a trail and followed you here…
…I love you Diana my dear…”.
The song betrays this sense of intense, spiralling obsession that seems to deepen in later tracks.

‘Night’s Cross’: ‘You’ll Be The Death Of Me’- ‘Desperation’
‘You’ll Be The Death Of Me’ brings back Dora Lee while the instrumentation stomps into a heavy sprint. You can almost feel the spiralling mood on the track, while our singer admits to Dora being their first obsession while living through their hot & cold relationship again. “…I love you so when you turn so cold…Dora Lee you’ll be the death of me…”.
‘Alligator Farm’ takes a trip with our narrator as they recount their days working at an alligator farm. The song feels like loud nostalgia on a trip, with the instrumentation pulling away from the vocals at times to sell this sense of disorientation. “…Lord I was always so high…”.
‘Cold Winter Moon’ opens with a calm, familiar piano melody that captures this sense of cold loneliness. The track’s forlorn guitars and lyrics reflect on a warm relationship that was let out into the cold, feeling sorry for letting down someone who helped our narrator feel less alone. “…Everywhere I look I see unfriendly eyes…a cold winter moon is on the rise…”.
‘Desperation’ takes on the loneliness of the last track with this muddy, deep sense that feels earthy and unique. Hand-played percussion and a raw vocal dig the album’s mood out of that spiral, with rhythms that march to a chanting, empowered beat.
“…Underground, out of sight,
Wait until dark of night, open eyes and hear the sound calling us from the ground…
…Oh desperation, we have no fear…”.

‘Night’s Cross’: ‘Oh Death’- ‘Ready To Go’
‘Oh Death’ brings back guitars and vocal melodies that feel distinct and isolated. The song begins to settle into a feeling that is calm but off-kelter, settling but uneasy.
“…Oh Death, I’d be your friend,…
…I’ll sing with you tonight…
…I found you in the end…”.
‘Ready To Go’ picks up on the emotions from the last track, moving swiftly to a mood that feels unhinged in its acceptance. The instrumentation feels injected with life, revving up and building like an engine, with this sense of finality and vitality present through the track.
“…Its my time and I’m ready to go…
…All my years of working here and I have a lot to show for it…”.
There’s also this sense that the narrator has found someone they’ve loved wholly that they take this opportunity to say goodbye to.
“…Mary, I know you wll miss me so,
Please know that I have loved you so…”.
It feels like our narrator has dragged themselves out of the mud (from ‘Desperation’) and is expressing that exhaustion.

‘Night’s Cross’: ‘Baby Doll’- ‘Underground Again’
‘Baby Doll’ is a rolling spiral wrapped in loud attitude. It’s mood is a unhinged spiral that feels like s free-fall. Its guitars cascade through with a unique melody that feels like a trickle. This while our narrator admits to the person they’re closest to this spiral was always their intention.
Their love this person is a spiral undying.
“…I have loved you all the way through everyday and the night,
I will hold your hand when we go crashing our of sight…
…My baby doll…”.
The final track on ‘Underground Again’ introduces deep, settled guitars with an instrumentation & vocal that feels fractured in their finality. The rhythm on the track feels like it swoops while we find our narrator in another pit od desperation.
“…I can’t stay here…I will lose my mind…
…My sweet baby please come with me,
I swear we’ll be just fine…”.
‘Night’s Cross’ by Rosetta West captures so many moods and emotions in its 41-minute run-time, keeping the listener immersed and engaged throughout. The tone felt moody and heady, while the lyrics told stories that captured the essence of an experience and communicated it expertly.
This album is an engaging, heady listen.
