Coming from the northern regions of Canada, Adrian Sutherland doesn’t just represent a roots-rock artist with passion; he’s also a creative force whose musical influences span rock, roots, folk, and blues. His work intricately weaves together elements of his life, the land he hails from, and his Cree culture. On his latest single, “Precious”, he treats us to a back-to-roots sound infused with the delight of country music. Keep reading for my thoughts!
The song has this unmistakable country tinge to it that remains authentic to Sutherland’s style– and it is nicely executed here. From the guitar in the intro laying down the basis for the song, the effects on the guitar strike me as interesting, their sound wafting around in space, yet with a level of control that I find quite impressive. As his vocals kick in, his style becomes far more strong, with his lyrical themes echoing the soulful Black music of the American South, drawing from the experiences of oppressed communities and paying a poignant tribute to the ongoing global struggle for freedoms and rights. A strong theme, really, and it is worth appreciating.

The production remains delightfully country rock with the clean electric guitars characteristic to the genre, and the vocal layers acting as more ammunition to the power of the songwriting at play; and there is a lot to like here. As a fan of country music, I found myself a fan of the style of execution on “Precious”.
