London-based singer-songwriter Andy Smythe is on a mission to revive the Brit-pop genre, blending the meticulous retro-sound craftsmanship of The Beatles with the vibrant 90’s spirit of Blur and The Verve. Bringing both styles together in his own distinctive way, keep reading for my thoughts on his latest single, “Out Of My Mind”!
Drawing inspiration from Lennon and Bowie, Andy’s introspective lyrics are complemented by his four-octave voice and virtuoso skills on piano, guitars, bass, and drums, echoing the versatility of McCartney. On this song, Andy brings the best parts of both these styles together– and fuses his own magic into them– with the inclusion of things like trumpets in the background, as well as a very jazzy/blues-like drum groove in the background, quite accentuating the ride cymbals and the brass elements throughout the song.

There is much to appreciate about Andy’s songwriting here, as his lyrics convey an amazing depth in meaning, and his vocal delivery is, in one word, powerful. There are also fun effects going on in the vocal mix that give it that artistically distant and wah-pedal like feel, pushing the boundaries of what a ‘pop’ track is supposed to sound like.
The niceties continue with the production, with all the elements retaining a bright, forward sound, and yet they sound cohesive throughout the song, not one element overpowering the other. The brass solo at the end is also masterfully written and executed, and along with the vocal harmonies throughout the song, bring a certain undeniable gravitas to the song, to much of my appreciation.

All in all, “Out Of My Mind”, by Andy Smythe: what is not to appreciate about this song? Everything comes together rather beautifully, it’s rather easy on the ears and takes you along for the journey; and I’m sure I’ll keep coming back to this one time and again. Check the track out here!
