It’s Whatever - My State
It’s Whatever - My State

‘It’s Whatever’ by My State is a biting pop punk shot in your veins

My State have been bubbling up for a bit, and if you haven’t heard their name, chances are you’re about to. This is a band that pulls together roots from two continents with Heth repping Lancashire, UK and Pablo hailing from Argentina. Their base is indie but their hearts beat punk, pulling in all that attitude and grit with a nod to the classic pop punk, emo sound, kind of like early Paramore tossing barbs with the energy of The Get Up Kids or Japandroids. It’s the sort of sonic world that would fit right in alongside a Scott Pilgrim vs. The World scene.

On “It’s Whatever” My State go for pure hard hitting whimsy. The band rides a breakbeat-inspired groove, carving out a rhythm that’s both punchy and just loose enough to invite a little chaos heads will definitely nod. Heth’s vocals are that satisfying brand of raw. She sounds like she’s shaking off the weight of everyone else’s drama, letting her voice crack in a way that feels honest and a little bit infectious. Pablo lets his guitar snarl and swerve around the drums, layering in just enough fuzz and bite so you can feel the emo and alt rock influences but still catch the hooks underneath.

What sells “It’s Whatever” is the groove and catchy lines coupled with the energy. My State toss personal frustration and shrugs into something everyone can sing along to. Not too neat, definitely not polished, but that’s what makes it a standout indie punk rock anthem. My State show that angst can be fun if you play it loud enough.
