With a background in opera singing and now out to make a mark in the music industry, Shana Sarett comes at us with her latest single, “Minnesota”. Keep reading for my thoughts!
From the first seconds of the song, we hear dreamy synth melodies that test the stage for Shana’s vocals to make their grand entrance–and she does, in her raspy, resonant voice that immediately strikes a chord in the ears of the listener. As we keep bobbing our heads to the gentle stream of percussion from the drum machine in the background, we settle into a nice, downtempo atmosphere, marked by Shana’s vocals, and by extension, her lines, “walk out late at night overcome by desire for a thing of the past, life’s moving fast without you around”– a wistful, almost nostalgic turn of events that adds to the emotive power behind her songwriting.

The production retains a beautifully ethereal theme throughout, the choir pads making a mark on the ears as they settle to be a persistent part of the instrumental, backed up beautifully by the wafty pads in the background, as well as the present and powerful bass; and with a gentle piano melody keeping us company, “Minnesota” truly makes it into the heart, with its lines in the refrain, “pull me in, drag me out”.

The songwriting is the definitive factor that makes this song such an enjoyable listen– and the production deserves props, too, for its ability to keep the listener focused on the vocal treat we’re offered throughout the runtime of the song, with the lines, “if we make it past Minnesota, we’ll never forget where we’re bound”– and this works beautifully well with the liberal, yet tasteful use of electronica elements.
