‘Locked In’: Heartache and Moving On
The song can be split into two parts; the building verses and pre-chorus and the expansive and broken down chorus. Its lyrics capture flashes of emotions, listing out ways the narrator tries to cope with their pain while everything reminds them of the person they were in love with.
“…I cope
By drinking
To put on a smile on my face
And forget about you for a while.
But I still hear you singing,
When my phone’s sat here ringing…”.
These lines set the scene for ‘Locked In’, after the electrifying intro to something building yet almost calm.
The song’s lines are filled with moments of reflection, resolve and anticipation. There’s hope that ocsilates to something sad and resigned, almost as though the only choice is to move-on. This despite the happy memories, that feel like dreams that the narrator is constantly reminded of.
“…Look in my eyes,
Tell me I’m dreaming.
Time pases by, over and over…
…It’s the time of my life, this ain’t right…”.
These lines are backed by guitars that play an expansive melody, allowing ‘Locked In’ to have a turning point. One that feels slow, grand and moving.
All in all, ‘Locked In’ by The Harbours is a bright, two-part soundscape that attempted to cope with heartache. Its an energetic listen, engaging and moving in spades.
