“Lagerstätte”, by Cochrane: Ethereal, ambient masterpiece!

Cochrane McMillan is a composer, musician, and artist based out of California — adopting an ethereal, experimental style that communicates deep, soothing messages through the use of texture and expert sound design, he presents his latest EP, “Lagerstätte” — a collection of four tracks, this EP is filled with envelope-pushing sound design experimentation that instils a sense of serendipity and peace in the listener.

The opener, “The Roiling Cells” finds itself filled with Oriental sounds, organic percussion and tasteful arpeggiates synths laid atop a gentle, moving drum beat that evolves just as organically as the melodies and the counter-melodies themselves; while the second track, “The cat, the muse” adopts a slower, more sober sound centred around the low, gritty bass and the icy high delayed pluck synths up top. The mixing is solid, the atmosphere is wide, and the execution superb with great choices for sounds, better interplay, and even better mastering that gives “Lagerstätte” a very warm, welcoming sound. The organic instrumental sound continues to feature prominently, making for an entertaining journey — motif after motif marking the highway like milestones. Take a listen to this EP here!
