Hailing from Switzerland, Claudia Balla is a singer-songwriter who has made a name for herself as a promising and noteworthy talent in the European music arena. She brings us to us, this time, “Winter Tale”; keep reading for my thoughts!
Right from the first second, “Winter Tale” invites us to explore a realm of divine beauty, beyond the constraints of time and space. The instruments, including harp, choir, cello, and piano, create an aura of absolute magic; the vocals are angelic, skillfully telling tales of life and destiny. Each note is filled with sweetness, creating a vibrant spectrum of emotions.

The album opens with “Gyönyörűszép,” where the classical choir heralds good news, inviting us to follow the brightest star in the sky. And even if we’re tempted to pause, the choir reminds us of the magic and sensations that await us on the other side– I’m getting dreamy, I know, but that is the kind of emotion that this album elicits, and it really is something quite remarkable.
In tracks like “Drive,” we sense the desire to escape from something or someone that burdens the soul– cathartic, in a way, almost, bringing out vulnerable sides of us that we may not even know existed; and over the course of this track, I found myself humming the melody long after the album had come to an end. Impressive!

The album’s intricate pieces, from “Téli éjszaka” to “Reménytelenül,” offer timeless compositions that find firm bases in classical music, each revealing its unique flow and impact upon our perceptions, as they sound in place on this album just as much they would on centuries-old, great classical music repertoire.
Of course, a project of such majesty has to have top-notch production to be so; and “Winter Tale” does not disappoint. Melodies and harmonies seamlessly flow into each other, and ideas become emotions– one after the other, leaving me, mouth slightly agape at the sheer mastery of harmony that this album is so chock full of. The engineering, as well, takes this from an already 11/10 to a further up number, with delicacy, intricacy and so much attention to detail, that every time I listened to a song for the second time, there was something new for my ears to pick up on.
“Winter Tale” is a masterpiece, and deservedly so– for the kind of experimentation, the kinds of emotions it made me feel, and I feel this album will be my go-to, or at least one of my go-tos for a long time. Easy, easy two thumbs up. Check out the album here!
