The Isles of Scilly are an archipelago of the UK located off the southwestern tip of Cornwall, England, which is where West Wickhams, an alternative/indie rock duo formed by Jon Othello and Elle Flores, comes from. Hailing from Tresco in the Isles but now based in Richmond, Surrey, the act aims for a psychedelic noir sound.

The West Wickhams are an imagined rival gang to punk style icons the Bromley Contingent. The Bromley Contingent were a group of followers of punk legends the Sex Pistols, who helped popularise the fashion of the early UK punk movement. Their influences and aesthetic all orbit around dark romanticism, surreal moods, and vintage pop culture, with a mix of gothic literature, spooky atmospheres, and bold visual art from Mary Shelley, to Edgar Allan Poe and Andy Warhol.
Their track “Up To The Old Tricks” serves as the lead single from the Sakura EP, their latest lo‑fi post‑punk and bedroom synth pop offering. Minimalist post‑punk with prominent synth and restrained vocals is what we get to see here. The track opens with synth lines that are heavily saturated and slightly hazy, establishing a dreamlike, nocturnal atmosphere. A steady rhythmic pattern underpins the track, with bass and drum elements kept simple to support the synth and vocal interplay.
There is much tonal color and the post‑punk character just shines through. The lo‑fi aesthetic is intentional, with a slight roughness in the mix that supports the band’s DIY and bedroom ethos. The music here is.focused on atmosphere, minimalism, and a blend of post‑punk, synth pop, and noir-tinged imagery. If you’re a sucker for classic post‑punk and coldwave, the vocals delivered in a detached, cool indie tone will be right up your alley.
