Frank Joshua Explores Regret and Self-Awareness on “Houston”

London singer-songwriter Frank Joshua marks his 50th release with Houston, a melancholic dream-pop single released on June 19, 2026 through Numen Records. The track continues his talent for giving complex emotions a clear voice through cinematic songwriting and understated melodies. Accompanied by a music video directed by Diego Monfredini using archival space-race footage, it talks about regret, fragile identity, and self-awareness.

Houston opens with light electronic textures that twinkle overhead. The vocals have this warm-dad nostalgic quality to them too, comforting in a way that feels familiar. It makes me imagine driving down the coast with the windows down and the sea just off to the side. The whole song sounds blue.

Meanwhile, the refrain, “Messed up in Houston, and I came round again,” feels like somebody replaying an old mistake over and over until it slowly loses its grip on them. The title seems to borrow from the famous “Houston, we have a problem” phrase, but instead of some huge disaster, the problem here feels human-sized. Maybe a relationship you can’t stop thinking about.

The lyrics are also filled with little snapshots. “What would you make of it, down by the lake” makes me picture somebody sitting by the water turning things over in their head. While, “I wasn’t this useless when I didn’t know you” is probably the kind of thought that slips out after you’ve spent too long thinking about somebody.

Though, for a song about regret, Houston never feels heavy. Again and again, it circles the same memories, mistakes, and questions, trying to understand how one person could leave so much of themselves all over your head. It sounds more like driving past the same places over and over until one day they don’t hurt quite as much.
