Flynn Rink – Down | Comfort

Flynn Rink, the stage name of childhood buddies Joe Welch and Jack Keating inspired by the hockey rink they used to go to, are out with a new indie pop trajectory in their friendship, their debut single Down. Down is a very pleasant and melodic song about a codependency coming to an end – but emphasises the Stockholm syndrome you’re left to deal with after.

Flynn Rink’s sound immediately struck me as Owl City meets Shawn Mendes, and the artists list their sound as John Mayer meets Coldplay – which leaves me not that far off. This idea of x meets y genre becomes really key to unpacking this duo: Jack plays indie guitar, deftly strumming as he sings melancholy lyrics, but this is set to twangy optimistic synths that have a dance vibe to them. Joe uses his finesse with electronic music production to create a fine fusion of indie/alternative pop and EDM with its classical percussion 4beat and an electronic-pop hook.

This debut contemporary collaboration leaves me eager to see the progression of their sound – a very interesting mix of genres yet light and commercial enough to actually be put on repeat. Do check it out here!
