Shib Shankar Chowdhury, aka Shib, seamlessly blends Western and Eastern influences in his music, rooted in Indian spirituality. Inspired by iconic bands like Duran Duran and U2, Shib, a singer-songwriter and producer, embarked on his musical journey in 2005, crafting original English compositions with collaborator Mr. Biplab Dhar in his hometown of Malda, India. “Yada Yada” blends elements of smooth, downtempo R&B with a slick, groovy trap-style beat that introduces us to Shib’s voice early and bright in the song; the pianos in the intro create quite a nice vibe to start us off with the song. Shib flows nice and slow, deliberating over the rhymes and the verses, with a melodically heavy rapping style that strikes one as quite catchy right from the get go.

The fusion of English and Sanskrit lyrics on “Yada Yada” is quite the standout– combined with the atmosphere that this track manages to create, it makes for quite the ethereal, divine listening experience; and Shib’s influences from spirituality shine through quite nicely here; as the composition delves into the realm of Indian spirituality, drawing inspiration from the Gita and The Mahabharata, presenting a historical and philosophical discourse of India in an epic musical form.

Something of note about “Yada Yada” is that the track showcased Shib’s innovative musical approach when presented as a research-based piece at the Craiglockhart Campus of Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland, soon after its writing in 2021; and as a strict musical endeavour, I think the track sinhes quite brilliantly in its own ways. There is much to appreciate about the production on this song as well, with the diverse sound palette that the beat adopts, successfully blending various influences together to create a cohesive, enjoyable sound.
