July – Pokey Lights | Sultry

Today, we’re listening to “Pokey Lights” – a new R&B/Soul track from London-based indie artist July. With over 500,000 streams on Spotify, the British artist has been making waves in the scene since 2017. His best-known track is “Catalina”, and he always demonstrates a unique style in his music that people can easily groove to! His latest release features smooth verses over slow-jam R&B beats and melodies; a mix that sounds fresh yet familiar at the same time.

“Pokey Lights” opens with an ambient electric piano loop and a deep R&B rhythm that supports July’s sensual vocals; a very The Weeknd-like sound right off the bat. His flow seems effortless and the catchy melodies make the track quite easy to listen to. “Go ahead and bust that white glow yeah / I’m a foreign light show yeah” – July’s sultry vocal tone and delivery here sit perfectly with the chill beat and ambient feel of the track.

He is influenced by a wide range of genres and artists that include Lionel Richie, P. Diddy, Phil Collins, and 50 Cent. Having performed as a musician and songwriter in London since 2017, July knows how to keep audiences engaged, and his tracks always have something special to offer. “Pokey Lights” is his second release of the year with over 20k streams on Spotify currently.

My guess is that July will soon be playing festivals around the world! By combining his songwriting skills with the fresh sounds of producer MLB, his music is right up there with artists like Jorja Smith and Ray BLK.
