Winnipeg-based indie-pop and electronic ensemble, VIKINGS have dropped their double single, Tanlines / Swimming at Night after a 3-year-long hiatus. It additionally features an Ash Halo Remix of Tanlines and a radio edit of Swimming at Night.
Having spent their lockdown in back-to-back studio sessions, the outfit has come out with their new musical discoveries. The lead single, Tanlines is a pop number that was born out of experimentation inspired by adventure and love. Swimming at Night sports a completely different vibe from its pop counterpart with its sonic and neon synth textures.
Tanlines kicks off with synth-coated beats that groove with a pumping rhythm. The scaling vocals have an oozing warmth, contrasted by the fresh sprinkles of unforgettable hooks. An infectious pop showcase of a love story, the song is peppered with dreamy guitar melodies that arch over breezy leitmotifs. We also see leveled keys that bridge diverse synth progressions within the song.
Swimming at Night opens with hardcore electric sound, traveling within neon music circuits. The mellow baritone vocals rise and fall from the sea of raging synths. Unrelenting dance beats form the moving point of the song, adorned with scintillating spirals of mysterious and sensual melodies. Loaded with a range of textures, the track mushrooms with sonic explosions.
Tanlines (Ash Halo Remix) is pure electronic music gold with a compelling rhythm, thick baselines, and vocoder punctuations. Sparkling synths occasionally sprout from the cracks in the pulsating remix.
With Dave McNabb on synths and drum programming, James McNabb on synth samples, and Josh Youngson on keys, vocals, and guitars, the double single is only the first of many upcoming releases in the next few months. Showcasing diverse and distinct styles and themes, the double single illustrates the musical range and skill of the band.
