Sydney, Australia-based alternative rock artist Will Soma has released an intense rock ballad with When You’re Asleep. This is his second release after the more straightforward grungy Days are Long. Soma is influenced by grunge and post-grunge artists like Chris Cornell, Mother Love Bone, Vertical Horizon, and the Goo Goo Dolls. Soma writes songs on maintaining perseverance despite what life throws at us and following, possessing, and losing what one previously desired.
The song beings with the drums laying down the slow-paced groove. The rhythm section consists primarily of acoustic guitars, which moves the song with increasing pace. We hear a very brief electric guitar solo that has some very tasteful phrasing. The drums in the track are well done highlighting the right energy in the various sections in the song. Lyrically, the song deals with desiring to express one’s feelings to someone but at the risk of losing them. In the chorus, the narrator questions whether they dream of him and wishes of somewhere they could be together.
Soma channels his inner John Rzeznik with impassioned vocals while giving a very satisfying rock singing performance. The song sounds very dense despite having only acoustic guitars. The emotional dilemma at the heart of the song is well emoted by Soma. Soma’s songwriting emotes the internal state of mind of the narrator and wraps it in adroit song production. This shows great production, mixing, and mastering work on the song. When You’re Asleep is a melancholic acoustic rock ballad with a tasty modern post-grunge sound.
