Tragically Unknown – Odes…

Icelandic rock band, Tragically Unknown has released its brand new album, Odes… and it is absolute perfection! Influenced by various turn of the century rock and pop punk bands and artists, the band infuses their tracks with a myriad of flavors that has us transfixed.

With its glistening rock riffs surfing vibrant basslines and catchy beats, Fly Free makes for the perfect breakout track. The delicate melody of the vocals beautifully contrasts the texture of the soundscape. Like a traipsing butterfly, the vocals have a dainty whimsy that casts a mystical spell. Villain Origin Story has Avril Lavigne’s Sk8ter Boy vibe, without the flying punk beats. A broken heart and shattered innocence fester into a potion of tragedy. The soft-rock riffs make for a warm backdrop for the leaping vocals weaving the theme together.

Snaking basslines and glowering riffs make up the roots of the next track, Uprooted. The dark melodies flower with obsidian agony, mirroring the haunting vocals. Freeing herself from the suffocating claws of unrequited love, the protagonist cuts off its weight and moves on with a lighter heart. In Between is the fourth track of the album. Glinting acoustic strings and easy beats open the song. Snowballing with energy, we see raging fuzzy riffs layered on top of tight basslines in the chorus. The track alternates between hardcore and acoustic melodies to bring out the emotions in the vocals.

Intermission slows down the energy with acoustics strings and vocals. The vocals are immeasurably soft and tender, reminding us of all things sweet and precious. Crossing the midway mark, we have You Just Don’t Get It. Packed with zeal and energy, shining riffs and tight basslines sweep the song into being. The song brings out how frustrating it is to deal with man-child, condescending men who act like tools and still think they deserve respect. The stellar melodies, catchy beats and the biting sass makes for a great listen.

We explore warm melancholy with the next track, Away From Here. The guitar melodies are fuzzy and warm against the dancing gloom of the vocals. Cymbal clicks and erupting basslines lead us to One Last Time. The rounded softness of the vocals stands out in the rough and porous riffs texture backdrop. Aching with romantic agony, the vocalist does some of her best work.

Necessary Without Doubt oozes with despondence and tragedy. The vocals unfurl with clarity. It is pragmatic and unclouded by melodrama. The engaging melodies made of fuzzy riffs and warm basslines lead the song to a smooth end, no loose ends, no emotions left behind, period. Worthy of Her Love concludes the album on a note of vigor. Its tempo flows easily, as if pre-decided. Its smooth grace and jiving cheer lightens the mood and perks us up.
