ROLF has this unique story telling style to their music. Its as if everything is unfolding slowly as the track progresses. This creates a sense of belonging and interest due to the involvement the listener has to their music. The vocals are powerful and clear. There is spacing between phrases that makes everything sink in before moving forward. Its as if their music is truly free. Free of the constraints of old school arrangement and playing style that just gives us a fresh perspective on the genre.
The ROLF is a Swedish band from Stockholm that have a unique sound palette. Their music is quite laid back and has really catchy chorus. The music just makes you sway, eyes closed, lost in thought! They are story tellers that use music to narrate.
Looks like shimmering has a very powerful introduction that kind of sets the pace for the rest of the track. Some very unique use of guitar sounds creates some very nice ear worms that just take you by surprise. The chorus wiggles its way into your head and sits there much after you finish listening to the track. The same can be said about the instrumental solo after the one-minute mark. This is probably the crux or fulcrum of the track.
To get a better idea of what goes on behind the ROLF, we had a conversation with them about what the ROLF is all about :
1. Does your band name have anything to with Rolfing? I mean your music style is like a form of alternate medicine!
“Ha ha, oh yes indeed. From this day on I will think of it as alternate medicine. It’s a medicine that works wonders for me anyway. Not too sure about the listeners though… “
2. From ‘No peace of mind’ to ‘looks like shimmering’ what has changed for The ROLF?
“Well, we haven’t quit our day jobs or anything like that, but I bought new strings to the guitar and lately we’ve moved the kick-mike from inside to the outside of the kick drum. I’m pretty sure we’re on the search for a developed sonic landscape. I hope we’ll get there someday tra la laaa. “
3. Was there an epiphany in your musical journey? That one moment that you knew this is what you should be doing?
“Not sure actually… But in the backseat of your parents blue Volvo, December, way up in the north of Sweden, pitch dark and suddenly Peggy Lee comes on singing Fever… I guess you can say that stroke a match. And of course, the cover of London Calling, looking so cool… just have to listen to it, you know. Could it sound as good as it looks, really? Bang! K.O…. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.”
4. This single is literally bleeding ‘easy living, easy listening’. What can we expect in the album if the single already does so much justice to what I assume is your album cover art?
“No no, you’re way wrong. I guess You refer to the little boy in the bath listening to music? That’s more of a summer dream, you know – nostalgic stuff. The upcoming album got the working title “Tractor”, ha ha, and that’s more how it’s right now actually. Not that easy and not so nice. More of a struggle.”
5. Who is your biggest inspiration? The idea to make music like this must have come from listening to a few bands that have impacted your life.
Mainly old stuff. Films and books… The rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar made a huge impact, great music, great story. And so did Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective, that series kind of covers it all I guess. I mean, I could list a lots of great artists, dead and alive, but I think I’ll stop here.
